The rear brakes of a car are either drum brakes or disc brakes with brake pads like the front axle. In general, the heavier and more powerful vehicles tend to have brake discs at the rear as well. The reason for that is that drum brakes would not be sufficient to bring a heavy vehicle driving at speed quickly to a full stop. Brake discs and pads are therefore used instead.

The rear brakes will be used less intensively than the front brakes however. The rear brake pads therefore will only need to be replaced every 37 000 miles. Nevertheless at Mister-Auto.com we do recommend you check the state of both front and rear brake pads regularly.
