What are ignition leads?
The ignition leads,
ht leads or ignition cable connect the plugs to the
ignition coil. They lead the high voltage tension from the ignition coil to the
spark plugs.
It is important that
ignition leads are in good condition to work properly. Over time, the insulation material -usually rubber- of the coils can dry out and crack or perish completely, which can lead to voltage leaks, misfires or rough running.
Apart from the cable itself, the connectors when dirty or badly attached to the plugs can cause voltage leaks. In this case the entire
ignition cable will need to be replaced. Faulty ht leads can be the reason of an MOT failure or an increase in your fuel consumption. At Mister-Auto.ie we recommend you check the state of your ht leads regularly to ensure they continue to work properly. In general, an ignition cable ought to be replaced every 37 000 to 49 000 miles.
