What is a particulate filter?
Car manufacturers are obliged to reduce the exhaust of polluting gasses from their cars. The European norm is 0.025g/km. The particulate filter is predominantly fitted to cars with a diesel engine as these are more polluting than petrol engines. Consequently this exhaust part is also referred to as the DPF (diesel particulate filter). The DPF is located just in front of the catalytic converter.
How does a diesel particulate filter work?
The dpf collects the particules from the exhaust gasses. To avoid the filter to clog up and stop working, a dpf cleans itself by burning the particules it filters from the exhaust fumes.
Particulate filters consist of several other car parts including a filter and temperature sensors.
