What is a particulate filter?
Car manufacturers are obliged to reduce the exhaust of polluting gasses from their cars. The European norm is 0.025g/km. The
particulate filter is predominantly fitted to cars with a diesel engine as these are more polluting than petrol engines. Consequently this exhaust part is also referred to as the DPF (
diesel particulate filter). The DPF is located just in front of the
catalytic converter.
How does a diesel particulate filter work?
The
dpf collects the particules from the exhaust gasses. To avoid the filter to clog up and stop working, a dpf cleans itself by burning the particules it filters from the exhaust fumes.
Particulate filters consist of several other car parts including a filter and temperature sensors.
