A catalytic converter is used to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines. They work by regulating three harmful compounds: hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides—and converting them into less harmful compounds, such as carbon dioxide, water vapour, and nitrogen gas. Nowadays they are found on most vehicles, and need replacing around every 74,500 miles. At Mister-Auto, we have catalytic converters for every major brand, at highly competitive prices.
It is unusual for catalytic converters to fail. If there is a problem, it is most likely due to external damage caused while driving the car, or even the use of chemical products, like antifreeze. However, they will become clogged over time. One clear indication of a problem is your fuel consumption. If your converter has failed, then you should notice a decrease in your fuel mileage. Reduction in performance due to increased back pressure, and even stalling while driving, is a second indication. In addition to this, converters can become damaged due to a bad exhaust valve on the engine. So, it’s essential to discover the root of the issue in order to avoid repeat problems.
Lastly, when you buy a catalytic converter, it’s important to ensure that the model matches your car. At Mister-Auto, finding the right piece is simple. Thanks to our intuitive search feature, you can refine your results based on your vehicle type. Alternatively, if you enter your registration number, we’ll locate it in seconds.
If you are experiencing problems because of your converter, changing it is straightforward. The catalytic converter is a large metal box located on the underside of the car. It has two pipes connected to it. One of these pipes brings in fumes from the engine, and the other connects to the exhaust and releases the converted gas. You can buy a new catalytic converter online—from there, it’s just a matter of a few simple steps.
You will need room to change the converter. Raise your vehicle off the ground using ramps or a car jack. Make sure that this is done on level ground as it can pose a safety risk if it’s not.
Allow the engine to cool down fully before attempting to touch it.
Read the vehicle manual. Familiarize yourself with the appearance of the catalytic converter, as well as how it is connected to the vehicle. If it’s not clear, contact a professional before dismantling.
Locate the catalytic converter. It should be in the centre of the exhaust system.
Locate and disconnect the O² sensor—you will need an O² wrench to do this. You will also need to remove the pipe or pipes, depending on the model, that connect the O² sensor to the catalytic converter.
Remove the bolts that hold the catalytic converter in place; first the bolts nearer the rear of the vehicle, then the front ones. They may be rusted and difficult to remove. If the converter has been repaired before, it may have been welded in place. If this is the case, consult a professional.
Install the new converter. How this is done will depend on the model. In this case, always refer to the instructions.
